Sixty Something – Season 2 – Episode 1 – Let’s Continue Our Conversation

[00:00:00] Hello, my wonderful 60 something family. How the heck are you? Oh, how I've missed you. Welcome back to 60 something. The podcast, that's all about thriving, growing. And loving life in our sixties and beyond. I'm grace, your host. And let me tell you, I am absolutely thrilled to kick off season two with you. I hope you've had a fantastic few months.

[00:00:33] I did. And that you're ready to dive back into our little corner of the podcasting world. Now. Before we jump into what's in store for season two. I want to ask. What have you been doing since we last met? I can give you a quick update on what I've been doing. During our break. Now, if you're in our Facebook group, you may have seen the little video I made recapping what I call my summer vacation. First my number two son of my five kids.

[00:01:10] My son, Brad came to visit for five wonderful days. This guy is such fun to spend time with. He lives in new Orleans and I hadn't seen him for over a year. We love to cook together and run around town together. And he and Aaron are great friends. So it's a real treat when he comes here. Soon after that, I went to LA for a short stay with our daughter Juliet and her three little kids. A few weeks later, Aaron and I vacationed with them for a few days at the beach in San Diego. Which is a long time family tradition.

[00:01:49] So it was really something. Doing the same things that we did with Juliet and her brothers when they were little with Juliet and her kids. Very special memories and we can't wait to do it again next summer. Of course, we hung out with our beloved Dorothy. And nursed her back to health after a serious ear and skin infection. Happy to report she's back to 100%. And loving everyone and pretty much everything as is her golden retriever nature. I did some cooking. Favorite things like chicken pot pie, only Martha's recipe people do. And since I was making pie crust, I had to make some cherry pies too. I like making small pies. They seem to turn out better.

[00:02:45] I did a photo and video shoot here at home. For using for promoting the podcast. If I ever get around to promoting the podcast. I also developed not one, not two. But the three new podcasts. One is about teaching hotel sales management, which. That's what I used to do, worked in hotels. Another is about Judy Garland's famous concert at Carnegie hall. And the last is a podcast about the true crime cases that have intrigued me over the years. Why? Why, you ask. I guess the answer is Why not?. I'll keep you posted on all of that. I devoted a lot of attention to my highest priority project, developing content for season two of 60 something. More about that in a minute. Let's first, take a quick stroll down memory lane. And revisit some of the topics we explored in season one. I have a couple of updates. You may want to hear.

[00:04:01] Okay. Daily routines. I remember my workshop and how we talked about crafting those routines that not only keep us. Focused and on track, but also bring us some joy. Remember how I had all those systems and plans for a fabulous new am routine. Well, I did do it. Uh, twice. Uh, I hate to admit that what a joke, but that's the truth.

[00:04:31] I can't lie to you. Hey, look, I beat my miracle morning record of just one time doing that. Eventually, I just told myself I was on summer vacation and would start in earnest in the fall. And now it's September. Fall. Hm.

[00:04:51] I also said, remember this, that I would try miracle morning again. That's when you get up at five and do a bunch of good for your stuff before you start your day. I did do it before years ago, as I said for just that one day. But I wonder. Can I do it for a work week? Just. Five days and incorporate my other am routine stuff into it.

[00:05:19] Well, I'm going to try gauntlet thrown. I'll give you an update on the October 3rd episode. Wish me luck because I'm going to need it. Next creating a legacy, which as you know, is a passion of mine. And I guess this topic struck a chord with. Some of you. Since we last talked, I've heard. From some listeners who want to start documenting their family histories, organize those boxes of family photos and so on. We're going to dive deeper into legacy building this season.

[00:05:56] So stay tuned if you're interested. I'm even creating a free mini course to get you started. And I'll share that with you in October. Now onto a less fun, but super important topic. Scams. I feel like ever since I did that episode about scams, all I see in the news is this scam and that scam. Did you see that on case with the lady?

[00:06:24] Her name was Laura.

[00:06:27] She's from Western Illinois. That's where I'm from. I'm from Illinois. Her husband died. And despite a wonderful family shit. Great children. She longed for romance in her life. And she connected with a man on match.com who ended up scamming her. Out of $1.5 million, her entire nest egg. He then manipulated her by forging a bond and then induced her to invest with his online trading firm.

[00:07:04] He somehow forced her. To dip her hands into the accounts of other victims. The poor woman was found dead in a town miles away from her home. And it sucks. It's suspected. She went there to meet him. Ah, this is just one example of the tens of thousands of scams being pulled on us every day.

[00:07:31] We really have to be careful in these times where technology and other factors have made it easy. To scam innocent victims. I'll be updating you and revisiting the subject in an episode next year. But in the meantime for heaven sake, keep your guard up. And finally I have to mention age-ism.

[00:07:54] You know how I feel about age-ism. And it is impossible not to mention the continual age-related drama we've seen, played out on the national landscape. In this country over the summer. I will never, ever. Discuss politics in this podcast, but both of the. Presumptive candidates. Were the subject of scrutiny with regard to their age. As you know, one candidate ended up dropping out of the race because of it. Frankly. Some valid points have been raised regarding age and the presidency.

[00:08:39] It's. Uh, revealed some issues that need to be confronted and resolved for future. If there's an age requirement. On the lower end.

[00:08:52] Eh, you have to be 35 years old. to. Be president of the United States, according to the constitution. Should there not also be a limit at the other end.

[00:09:06] Of the spectrum. Should cognition and health checks become part of their requirements to be president in this country as well. People of all ages are subject to accidents and health-related emergencies. We are, however, we are more vulnerable to certain issues as we age.

[00:09:29] That's not age-ism. That's just a fact. Should that be a consideration in our requirements of presidential candidates or even other government offices. Although these concerns are understandable. Now we're getting on to the slippery slope of age discrimination. I don't have any answers. I just found it fascinating. To see such a dramatic demonstration of age-ism in the news, just. A month or two after doing a podcast on this subject. We did tackle some pretty tough conversations last season.

[00:10:13] And guess what? We're going deeper and season two. But we're going to have fun too. All right. My friends let's talk season two. If you thought the first season was packed with good stuff, just wait til you hear what I've got lined up for you over the next year. I'm talking about episodes that will make you laugh, cry, think, and most importantly, live your best 60 something life. First up. We're diving into a topic near and dear to my heart. Pets.

[00:10:49] Now. You all know how much I adore my golden retriever. Dorothy, she's been through that rough patch. this summer, but. She's. Back to her. Happy-go-lucky self. I'll be sharing all about the incredible bond we have with our pets and why they're so important to us, especially at this stage in life. You won't want to miss that. And speaking of legacy again, we're going to go even further into how you can leave your mark. Not just for your kids. But for generations to come. Whether it's through stories, photos, or traditions, I'm here to help you lock in that legacy. By request from listeners will return to discuss more about that subject.

[00:11:37] That can be a bit of a roller coaster, our relationships with our adult kids. There's much more to say about these tumultuous, unpredictable, but also often enriching and rewarding bonds. Let's go there. Together. And for those of you, who've been wondering. About social media. Yeah, we're going to take a look at that too.

[00:12:02] The season, like reviewing the different platforms and

[00:12:06] best practices for making social media work for you. Not against you. Another fascinating topic we'll explore is generational trauma. This one's deep folks, but it's important. We'll uncover how the experiences of our parents and grandparents can affect us. And how we can heal those old wounds. But don't worry.

[00:12:34] It's not all heavy. We've got some episodes designed to spark your creativity, whether you're an artist at heart, or just looking for a fun new hobby. Plus we're jumping on the pickleball bandwagon. Have you tried it yet? I hear. It's the perfect mix of fun and fitness. And I can't wait. For my favorite guest, my husband, Aaron Segel to return and share all about it. He's like a pro. And last, but certainly not least.

[00:13:09] I'm very excited about our episode on how to tell a story. Whether you're sharing on social, writing, a memoir, developing your legacy plan, or simply writing a letter. Storytelling is an essential ingredient. Everyone. Has a story to tell. And I'm going to help you tell yours in a way that captivates and helps you connect in a meaningful. And effective way. Oh, my gosh. This is so much to take in.

[00:13:40] I know. And there's so much more. Trust me. It's going to be an incredible ride. We're going to have fun. Before I let you go. I want to ask that you please let me know what you think. I must hear it from you. What topics are you excited about? Do you have a story to share? A question you've been dying to ask. Head over to our Facebook group and join the conversation. Let's make this season. Even more interactive and connected. Than ever before. I'd like to say a huge, thank you. Thank you for your support, your stories, your energy and your enthusiasm. We're in this thing together, and I'm so grateful to be on this 60 something journey with you.

[00:14:33] So what's next.

[00:14:35] As I mentioned in our very first full episode of season two, we're going to talk about one of my favorite subject. Pets. You won't want to miss it. So make sure you're subscribed. And if you know someone who might enjoy our little 60 something community, Please share the podcast with them. The more the merrier. And that spirit. I really appreciated you.

[00:14:59] Please rate And review this podcast. That is, if you like it. Uh, it helps people find us. And as I said, the more the merrier. Finally. Welcome back. And until next time. I want you to.
