Sixtysomething - Episode 7 - All About This Podcast

[00:00:00] GTS: Hi you Sixtysomethings, you. Welcome back to the podcast made just for you. This is Grace, of course. And I'm so glad you're here. This episode is called “All about this Podcast.” This is a special one. I want to take a moment to delve into the heart of this podcast. Share a bit more about myself, how I produce the episodes and ways I hope to fine tune the entire thing for you. As well as admit to my big goof-up. One among many. I'll outline my plans for our journey together through this season of the Sixtysomething podcast, including additional subjects I'll be covering in this first season. And beyond.

[00:00:48] GTS: My name again is Grace Taylor Segal. I live in the California desert in the Palm Springs area. Resorts are big here. We have many [00:01:00] hotels and 122 golf courses at last count. I've lived here for 36 years. And it is gorgeous. We live in a valley surrounded by mountains. But it gets so hot. Up to 110 plus sometimes in the summer. That has taken some getting used to. I've been married for almost 32 years. I have five children. Four boys and a girl. They're all grown up. I have 15 grandkids. I don't see any of them as much as I would like. They're busy. I've had two careers.

[00:01:44] GTS: I was a hotel convention sales manager. I worked in the big hotels in this area. My job was to bring meetings and conventions to the hotels I represented. I traveled frequently all over to trade shows and visiting [00:02:00] clients and potential clients in their offices. My territories were New York and San Francisco. It was a fabulous career, but after about 12 years, I got restless.

[00:02:13] GTS: Bored. I really didn't want to travel anymore. I'd gotten it out of my system by that point. And at that time, my youngest child was just five years old and I got a little spooked about flying, to be honest. I didn't want to be away from home for a week at a time anymore. So, I made a switch. I'd become very interested in a marketing over my years in sales. And I pushed my way—literally--into a job in marketing at the local newspaper. And I learned many of the ins and outs of marketing. Some things about editorial. A lot about publishing. And that led to my next career. How I got there is a long story, [00:03:00] but I became the editor graphic designer and ad sales manager for a monthly magazine with 100 plus pages. Glossy publication for a private community. My business grew. At one point, I had five of those client communities and I was performing all those roles for all five of them every month. Hectic. But fun and fulfilling. I worked for myself and I could pick up my daughter every day from school and be more available to my sons, which meant everything to me. That career also lasted about a dozen years. Finally, I wanted to pursue a more entrepreneurial-type business. I've been working on that for several years now.

[00:03:48] GTS: And the first big project that's actually come to fruition. Is this podcast. I'm just getting started.

[00:03:57] GTS: There are a few reasons. I decided to produce this [00:04:00] podcast, which I've shared before, but just to review: my kids are grown. They and their families mostly live far away. So, I don't see them often. Don't get to talk to them that much. A lot of my friends moved away or drifted away. My parents are gone now. I've personally experienced that loneliness epidemic the Surgeon General warned us about. I have my husband, Aaron, we're close and we talk a lot. And I have some wonderful family members, as well as a couple of friends. But we don't see each other much. Everyone is so caught up in their own lives.

[00:04:38] GTS: I must also stop and mention my beautiful dog, Dorothy. She is a five-year old Golden Retriever. And she's my little girl and my constant companion. She's gotten me through some tough times. It's an amazing thing to have a relationship with a pet like her. But I realize [00:05:00] I need human interaction too. I thought it would be great to connect with people who are in a similar situation via this podcast. Once again. I thought we could share our perspectives and find ways of improving our lives. By building a community whose members have a lot of these issues in common. In addition, some of the unique challenges we face really make me mad. And I was eager to find an outlet to express that in a constructive way. Especially among people who would understand struggles with things like facing age-ism and adult children issues, forgiveness, generational trauma, health scares. Oh, the list is long. These things are frustrating and frightening too. It seemed like it would be so helpful to join together and confront these trials. Even if it's just, I'm going to talk about what I think in this podcast. [00:06:00]

[00:06:00] GTS: And in return, you let me know what you're thinking and feeling. And then perhaps in the future some of you could even come on the show and we could talk about it. So we can all benefit. That's my ultimate goal. I started the 60 something podcast for those reasons. I also thought it would be fun. I have a plan for this podcast, this community. It's evolving as we go. I'm structuring it in seasons.

[00:06:27] GTS: We're in season one right now, and we'll have 12 episodes plus three bonus episodes in this first one. Then I'll take a short hiatus for four weeks or so. And then be back with season two around the beginning of August. I will stay active on social media. And may publish some surprise episodes for you during the break.

[00:06:50] GTS: So, don't unsubscribe. I'm hoping this hiatus will provide an opportunity for us to be in touch so I can learn your [00:07:00] thoughts on these various subjects I've discussed and plan to in the future. In fact, I beseech you. Give me some ideas. I'm sharing my list of subjects I'm planning for future episodes. It's in this episode show notes. I want to make sure I cover issues that are most important to you.

[00:07:19] GTS: I want them to be meaningful. In a perfect world, every episode of this podcast would be unforgettable. That would be my goal, but it's just not realistic. If you're listening to these in order. Or even if you listened to them out of order, if you listened to them all, you've heard six episodes so far, this is your seventh. And you know that some of them are better than others. But even in the less compelling episodes, the subject matter is important. As I said in the beginning, I'm not an expert on a lot of things, but I can do the research and I can share that.

[00:07:57] GTS: and my experiences, tell you what's [00:08:00] happened to me, what I did, what the research says. And then hopefully, after you listened to the show, you'll tell me what you think and what you've experienced. That's how it’s supposed to work. And that's what I'm hoping for. The subjects for the episodes that I've planned for the remainder of this season one, Episode Eight: A Daily Routine Workshop. Episode Nine: The Joy of Grandkids. Episode 10: AI for Sixtysomethings. Episode 11: Diet, Weight Loss and Ozempic. Episode 12: The Adult Kids Dilemma. Bonus Episode 1; To follow up on Episode 12: A Conversation With My Daughter. Bonus Episode Two: Entertainment. Bonus Episode Three: My Story. And as I mentioned, likely a surprise or two to tide you over during my [00:09:00] summer break. Next. I've mentioned

[00:09:03] GTS: I have many projects underway and on my to-do list,

[00:09:08] GTS: such as my legacy projects and others I hope to tackle. I thought it might be fun to include you in on some of these. So, you can do some of them if they interest you. When I'm ready to start, I'll announce it in the podcast and put the details for that particular project in the show notes and in the Facebook group. Create some videos also to guide you. You can jump into any of those, if they interest you or just ignore them

[00:09:36] GTS: if not. I'll let you know when I get rolling with that. Also, I told you about the family cookbook that I created with my mom's recipes. That was an Episode 3: How to Create a Legacy, about my ongoing legacy projects. I'm going to be following that cookbook up soon with a second family cookbook where I'll invite my family members to contribute a [00:10:00] recipe or two, along with photos and stories. I would love to do that for our community at some point. We could all submit recipes, and I could put them together in a cookbook. “The Sixtysomething Cookbook.” I'll let you know when I'm ready for you to submit your recipes and exactly what I'll need. Because I want it to be beautiful. I'll need your recipe, maybe a couple of photos, and a paragraph, a short paragraph, of your thoughts or memories about the recipe that you submit.

[00:10:30] GTS: The cookbook itself would be a PDF, a downloadable free file. And we can also do an actual paperback book version that I could make available on Amazon for a minimal price, just at cost. And then you'd be able to get the paperback book version if you want it. I'm really excited about this idea. I'll make sure to keep you updated on these and any other projects I mention in the podcast that seem like good ones for our community. [00:11:00] Let me know if there are any that call out to you.

[00:11:04] GTS: I thought I'd tell you a little bit about the process I use to create this podcast. The greatest challenge for me is writing the episodes. I start with an outline. And then I do the research and it's a rather slow process. I compile the notes and then I use my outline and those research notes to record a rough version. I just use a little lavalier mic and my iPhone. Then I transcribe that recording, make corrections and then record the final version. I take the final, I go into my little podcast booth, where I'm sitting right now. It used to be a closet in my office. I’ll put a link to a picture of my little booth that I built up in the show notes

[00:11:52] GTS: so you can see it. Anyway, I'll go in there and record with my good microphone on my computer. Then I [00:12:00] prep the show notes, gather the links, upload the recording with all of those into the distribution website, which publishes the podcast and sends it out to Apple, Spotify, all the platforms, as well as to my Sixtysomething website. And then to you via your device. That's it. It sounds like a lot, but it's really not that bad. And I figure I'll improve with every episode. One of the reasons I wanted to do this episode is, I want to officially promise you, I will get better. Stick with me.

[00:12:36] GTS: Keep coming back. I'm going to do my best to talk about meaningful subjects and to make even the more mundane things as entertaining as possible. I also want to acknowledge that I've goofed up. You probably already noticed my goof-ups because you've heard them. But likely the biggest mistake I've made which I realized about four episodes in [00:13:00] is if I want you to participate, I need to do more than just say, “oh, go to my social media, blah, blah, blah.” I need to ask you specifically, what do you think about this subject that I've covered?

[00:13:11] GTS: What are your experiences? What did you learn? I can't forget to always ask you pertinent questions and encourage you to share your responses on social media. Oh, and another idea. Maybe you would like to know how to start a podcast. Why not? I'll do a whole episode about how you can create and produce your own podcast. I'll share the links to everything I use. And if you're not interested, just skip that one. Gosh. This was a lot to absorb

[00:13:43] GTS: I know, but it seems important to let you know what I'm up to and ask again for your participation.

[00:13:53] GTS: I may do this once a season like a state of the union address. As for as my story, [00:14:00] I'll do a whole episode about that. Sometime in the future, in the near future. So, if you're curious to know more about me, I'll get into that very shortly. In the meantime, follow me on social media. There's a lot about me and my life to be found there

[00:14:14] GTS: if you want to get to know me better. Or if you'd just like to see my pretty girl, Dorothy. Okay. Do you have any thoughts about any of these projects you'd like for us to do together? Any suggestions for episode topics? Remember, my list of upcoming episodes for this season, as well as a long list of topics I'm considering for the future, is linked in the show notes. And you can reach me via any of the links in the show notes.

[00:14:44] GTS: I'm waiting to hear from you! But for now, I want to thank you so much for being here for listening. And for hopefully reaching out to me at some point when you have the time. If you would leave a review, I would just love it. [00:15:00] All I really ask is for you to keep coming back. I'm really looking forward to a long and meaningful collaboration with you.

[00:15:08] GTS: I hope you enjoyed this episode. Next time in episode eight, we're going to do a morning routine workshop. Oh boy. I hope you're ready. I hope I'm ready. All right. See you then next time on Sixtysomething.
