Sixtysomething Podcast - Bonus Episode 2 - Spend the Day with Me
[00:00:00] GTS: Good morning. I'm excited. We're gonna spend the day together. As you can see, it's dark in here. My eyes are barely open. So, meet you in the kitchen in a few minutes for coffee.
[00:00:19] GTS: Welcome to Sixtysomething. I'm Grace. I'm so glad you're here.
[00:00:26] GTS: Okay, so here's the first thing I see when I'm walking down the hall. To get the coffee, I had to take a moment, record this little baby. Yes, it's my baby Dorothy, isn't she beautiful? Oh, she's such a beauty. Yes, she is. I'm gonna show you a little tail wagging. She's so happy. She's a happy girl. Good morning, baby.
[00:00:54] GTS: Okay, talk about starting the day on a positive note, right?
[00:00:57] GTS: Okay, time to make some coffee. I'm still waking up, folks. I don't have a whole lot to offer yet. Uh, I'll be better once I get this caffeine in my system. Oh, okay, let's get the actual coffee into the actual filter. Get that baby going. I like it strong. I like it strong. Everybody like my men like it strong. Okay. So we'll get that going. Get my spoon and all my stuff set up.
[00:01:46] GTS: And my water's next. Just gonna get a little ice and get a little water.
[00:01:54] GTS: I can do without the coffee, but I gotta have my water, right? Gotta have my water. So, like that. And then I take cream in my coffee. Not ashamed to say it.
[00:02:07] GTS: If I can find it. A lot of stuff in here. Okay. We're all set. It's going to take the coffee a little minute to brew. So, let's go and get situated over at the table.
[00:02:25] GTS: Now the table, I don't always keep all the, I've got a bunch of stuff on the table. I got a bunch of stuff on the table, but I don't always keep this much stuff on the table. But today I have because I want to be all ready to do whatever I need to do to make this amazing recording happen. So far, thrilling, huh?
[00:02:52] GTS: I will edit carefully. I promise you that. I promise you that. Okay, so here comes Dorothy. What you want? You want your bone, huh? Yeah, Dorothy has a little bone every day, and she tells me when. She's telling me right now. I want my bone, mom. Give me my bone. Okay, let's get your bone, babe. Let's get it. I'll be right back. Baby has to have her bone.
[00:03:24] GTS: Phew. Got it. Mission accomplished. There she goes. Bye, Dorothy. Enjoy your bone. See you in a few minutes.
[00:03:38] GTS: Hmm, coffee's ready. Dorothy's with her bone in the other room and I'm just gonna sip my coffee. Ice water. And I'm probably gonna read the news. Not for an hour, just for, you know, 10 minutes. It's not that exciting to listen to. So, I'll be back.
[00:04:04] GTS: The coffee is procured. News has been perused. And now it's time for my devotional.
[00:04:15] GTS: And good morning. Okay. Everybody.
[00:04:20] GTS: Of course you have no idea how many accidents like that have happened already today. So yes, I am recording a podcast, Brad, and it's called, what's it called? Uh, spend a day with me. Yeah, well, I'm trying to make it exciting so far. It's been a bit of a bore, but you've added some very welcome variety. And this happens a lot, guys.
[00:04:45] GTS: Sometimes I call him, sometimes he calls me. And this thing is a portal. It's called a portal. They don't really make them anymore. You might be able to buy one, but it's a great device. Brad lives in, uh, New Orleans. And we've been able to talk a lot, even before he moved there on this thing. And, uh, it's, it's, it's like we live across the street from each other sometimes.
[00:05:09] GTS: Yeah. So what are you up to today?
BMS: Um, what am I up to? I work at, uh, at four my time, so I still have a few hours to go. I think I'm gonna take my, my, my tiny blender to work just to mess around you. Yeah. I don't think, I don't think those are practical for, for, you know, for doing all the time, but it'll be fun to whatever.
[00:05:28] BMS: Oh. So the process for that, by the way, is definitely, I blend all the stuff first, like the coconut stuff. And the pineapple and the rum, and then I slowly add ice. Got it. And that seems to work to get the texture. The last, even though the batter in my one last night was really good, like shocking good.
[00:05:43] GTS: What we're using, I'll show you those little blenders that they have and we're into pina coladas, right? Brad's always has been, but he's turned me on. He was just visiting here and, uh, but I put, I made a huge mistake. I put the ice in first. So it was as if it was frozen, you know, it was like the, the blade couldn't move.
[00:06:00] BMS: I made some chili last night also.
[00:06:05] GTS: Oh, yum.
BMS: So I'm gonna, yeah. I'm gonna put It has, it has the buffalo and pork or bison, I suppose. Wow. Cool. So, uh, yeah. So and I used whole chilies, which was kind of fun. So it should be delicious.
GTS: Remember my chili at home? I used to make it once about once a week and now I can't eat chili anymore. I made some and it It destroyed my stomach and I'm barely able to eat ground beef anymore.
[00:06:29] GTS: Yeah, it is a shame. I miss it. I've tried, but it's just the magic is gone.
[00:06:33] GTS: I got to get back to sharing my day since it's, okay. I love you, honey. Welcome to the podcast, by the way, you're in, well, you'll be in next season. We'll figure something out. Okay. Have a great day. Bye.
[00:06:48] GTS: And that's my Bradley Michael. I hope you enjoyed meeting him. It takes, uh, you can see, and sometimes the calls go on a lot longer than that, so it takes a bit out of my day, but so well worth it. You know, that's what life's all about, it's family and love. But you know that about me, you know I think that.
[00:07:07] GTS: So anyway, back to, back to the morning routine. I'm not going to go through the whole thing with you because we already did that, didn't we? Now, you may recall my passion planner sheets that I print out and I put all my plans. I put all my big to dos at the bottom and then I plug them in during the week and my morning routine binder, which has all the stuff that I do every morning. Hopefully. I don't always do it, but I'm trying. I'm absolutely dedicated. I guess I've a little bit, um, a little bit, I guess I have rationalized that it's summer and I'm on summer vacation. So I'm just sort of practicing my morning routine. And then, you know, when school starts. I will full time morning routine and just charge into the new year because that fourth quarter is really important.
[00:08:16] GTS: We'll see. I'm going to do my best and I always try to do my best, right? So I'm going to do the morning routine and at least the planning part and the mindset part and then how about we meet in the Peloton room where I'm gonna do my workout. I'll see you see in a few minutes.
[00:08:40] GTS: Okay guys, it's workout time and I'm going to put on my headband and clip up my hair because I can't stand it when the hair falls in my face when I'm trying to exercise and concentrate. And a little chapstick and I don't really use headphones. I usually watch a show, uh, when I exercise and I need to lickity split it. Okay, so let's go. We're gonna see Dorothy. There she, oops. I see you, dude, my girl. I gotta exercise, okay? Okay, I'll see you in a minute. Give a little scratch. Gotta love that girl. Okay, so. We're off to the gym. Meaning, the Peloton room. This is the Peloton room. We got a bike. I don't like that so much. There's the tread. Oh shoot, wrong shoes. I'll be back. I gotta change my shoes.
[00:09:43] GTS: On the treadmill now. Getting going. Got my show on Netflix playing. So, I'll see you in a little while.
[00:09:52] GTS: I did it. It wasn't bad. It was great, really. I, uh, I usually watch shows. Sometimes I listen to, you know, upbeat music that I love, but anything to kind of keep me going. But it's just opening this door, you know, it's just stepping onto that treadmill. I don't know why it's so hard. I think it's called resistance and it can happen.
[00:10:20] GTS: It can happen a lot. So anyway, I overcame the resistance for today. Thanks for helping me. All right, on to the next.
[00:10:27] GTS: People seem to do this all the time, skin care routine, uh, so I'll do it. I use Kiehl's. My daughter gave me a little set for my birthday this year and started me on my new quest for better skin. I used to use Dermalogica, then my laziness got me, so I was occasionally washing my face with Dove soap, I love Dove, but I decided I could do better, and my daughter really encouraged me. She has beautiful skin, and so I thought, why not? Especially if she gave it to me for my birthday, right? Pretty soon, I'm going to have to replenish, spend my own money, and you know, it's worth it. I've really decided, yeah, I had a hard time choosing which brand, you know, which products. But this way, it was given to me. So. I didn't really have a choice, and it was perfect. It was perfect, so once again, I used Kiehl's, just their basic stuff. I think the set that she got me, you can buy on Sephora, and I think it's like a $68 kit. I recommend it, especially as a place to start. We'll see if I get that, or if I upgrade. I'll, I'll let you know, in case you care.
[00:11:44] GTS: Dorothy also has a skin care routine because I mentioned to you, you know, she got a skin infection. She got very sick. So we've got some ointment that we put on to where her sore spot was. It hasn't healed completely. We had a donut on her neck, but she managed to scratch anyway. You can see the scratch marks, but it's well enough now that it's not as itchy. And, it seems like it's healing without the donut. So yay. And all of that hair around her face will grow back. I think she was a little self-conscious at first, but she's better now, you better now, huh?
[00:12:26] GTS: I was about to go get dressed, but something is happening that I want to share with you.
[00:12:35] GTS: I heard something.
[00:12:37] GTS: Somebody's home.
[00:12:39] GTS: Let's see who our mystery guest is. Not that much of a mystery. Let's see who our mystery guest is. Uh, not that much of a mystery. Let's see who it is. Who is it?
[00:12:53] GTS: Dorothy is ready for the mystery guest. And just moments till the big reveal. Where is the gentleman caller? Is my gentleman caller coming or not? He's a little slow sometimes. He takes his time. Oh boy. Oh boy. Look who's here. Hello there! It's Aaron Siegel! How you doing? Our favorite TV and movie reviewer.
[00:13:21] APS: How's your day going? So far so good. Great to be home. How's your day going? Great to see Dorothy. Great to see you. I love you. I love you too. Welcome home. Yes.
[00:13:31] GTS: We're back. A little spruced up. I did my hair and makeup and I have my beautiful dog here. Typically if I'm on my schedule, I would come in here. This is my office. This is my big computer. And I would work on either this week's or next week's podcast or some other project. Right now, I have this script, well, it's not exactly a script, it's the outline for this week. And at this point, I'm going to talk a little bit about podcast planning, writing, etc., etc. Now, this is probably the first time that I've had absolutely no script at all. I have an outline with some ideas. I don't really like to wing it because I find that I just sort of think too much, probably, and lose my train of thought or can't think of exactly what I want to say. So usually I will write myself some sort of very detailed outline or even a script or even do a trial run and make a script out of that. That is honestly what I do. Now maybe someday after I've done this for a few years, I will be able to just hop on it. That's exactly what I thought it was going to be like after I did a couple of episodes, but that's not what it's like. I can't just hop on and ad lib, it just doesn't come naturally to me, which is not to say that I don't inject comments into the script. I think you can tell it's not like I'm just reading. Sometimes the research, it's like I'm just reading, because I am, but generally I insert my own comments as we go along.
[00:15:31] GTS: That's what I would be doing right now. Another thing that I might do at this point in time is work on a legacy project, you know, get going with that. Let me show you a couple of things. These are audiotapes, the cassette version of me and my kids when they were little, little boys. They were three and four and an infant and me talking about what my life was like in those days. And uh, I haven't listened to them all the way through, but I'll tell you what, it's like being visited by a ghost to hear. My little boy, the one that you met on the portal earlier that I did the video call with. Little Brad. He's, I think he's three years old and he's, his older brother Tracy and myself. It's, it's pretty wonderful. But I can't share them with anybody because they're on these cassette tapes. So I got this device and you plug it into your computer and you play the tapes and it makes an mp3 out of them. So once I do that, I can share them and I can, you know, put them on the family archive website that I had. I don't have a website. I have a Google Drive Folder, maybe someday I'll have a website but for now, there's a folder that I share with everyone and they're able to go and, you know, look at the photos and videos and now they'll be able to listen to these audio tapes from, what, '83. '83. I think there's one from probably '93 or '94. So there's a variety of time periods. But anyway, I'm excited about that. I don't think it'll be hard. I think it'll be a little time consuming, but I don't think it will be difficult at all. And I have another project. I have my family photo and video archive things that I'm done with. I think I have to sort the digital photos of me and my brothers, so I'm working on this other project. I have a giant bulletin board over where Dorothy is resting. And yeah, you know, I love true crime. And so I'm making one of those crime boards. That you see on the detective shows. I've made the little cards. Yes, I'm doing Durst first. So I've got all the cards, the names, the pictures, some biography information of the players in the case. Now I did something a little bit different. They put maps on those crime boards, but I did an outline of New York City. I have a little lakeside cabin image because one of the scenes from his life is set at this cabin. I don't know if I'm going to use those or not. I haven't made up my mind, but definitely going to use the cards. And of course I have the obligatory red yarn. I don't know what I'm going to do with that either. I don't know how I'm going to connect the dots there, but I'll find a way. And that is my more hobby project that I will be embarking on. I'm going to work on these things for a little while.
[00:18:52] GTS: I have to go with my husband. He's having oral surgery and he needs me folks. He needs me. I'm just kidding. He wants me to go over and sit at Starbucks. So it's not like I can hold his hand or anything.
[00:19:04] GTS: But at least I can drive him if he's sick. He's not feeling 100 percent after the procedure. So I'll catch up with you after that. Hey, maybe I'll even give you a little shout out from there. We'll see.
[00:19:17] GTS: Since I'm sitting here with Dorothy I plan to tell a story or two about her, of course, I'm blanking out, but I guess the story that I would tell about her is we got her right after my daughter gave birth, maybe on the same day, almost. And shortly after my daughter gave birth, in that next six months, it was the darkest valley of my life, because I had thought that that time of being first grandma and I just thought it would be like it was with my mom, where my mom was so involved and she came and helped me and you know, it was so beautiful. And it was, you know, nothing. It was non existent. There were no phone calls really, no photos or videos. It was I'd have to catch it on social media, and I was sort of frozen out. I think her husband didn't want me to have anything to do with it. And she had a lot of friends and a lot of support from the folks in her church. There were a couple months in that period that I talked about where we didn't even talk. I wrote her the letter. If you've listened to my episode with her, you'll hear all about the letter and what a misfire that was. But this dog kept me going. This beautiful, beautiful animal. This girl kept me going. Yes. I had to get up every day to take care of this little puppy. Yes, I did. And she gave me so much love. And I was able to lavish all the love that I couldn't give my daughter and I couldn't give my granddaughter. I could give it to her. And I still do. She's my baby. I'm so grateful to her. So grateful to God for giving her to me. And at that particular point in time, it was such a blessing, such a blessing. I always feel like somehow my mom and dad looked down from heaven and said, "You need something to get you through this. I'm gonna send you a beautiful beautiful golden retriever and you're gonna take one look at her and you're gonna say, 'Oh, her name is Dorothy.'" I'm gonna put that picture up so you can see. The first time I ever saw this dog, little puppy, and I just looked at her face and I thought, "Oh, that's Dorothy." Okay, I gotta go. It's time to take him to the dentist, so I'll check in with you later.
[00:21:47] GTS: Made it. Not big on those.
[00:21:49] GTS: Not big on recording at Starbucks. But. Now the tooth has been pulled. Went and got Dorothy. On our way to the park.
[00:22:03] GTS: We're going to walk her.
[00:22:03] GTS: Good girl. Yes. Okay, I'm coming. I'm coming. What are you doing? You're being crazy.
[00:22:15] GTS: Is there a park way? Yeah, you're not gonna go. We're gonna go back. Do you like it?
[00:22:23] GTS: Bon appétit, friends. I'm dining alone tonight. As you know, if you've been listening or watching, my husband Aaron had a tooth pulled, so he's on a liquid diet till tomorrow. And I'm just gonna eat alone. I have, uh, not the healthiest, but quite a delicious dinner. It's leftovers from this past weekend when my son was visiting. I have some roast beef that I made, some pineapple coleslaw that I made, a couple of rolls, and my cherries, my favorite, and of course my big glass of ice water. So, I'm gonna eat, and see you soon.
[00:23:04] GTS: Well, it's nighttime. Aaron has gone to bed. I'm winding down. I'm going to go through my PM routine here in just a minute. And I wanted to thank you. I know that this may not end up being a fan favorite episode, but I want to try new things. So I thank you. You may have discovered that about me already. I just want to try some things and not be afraid to try new things.
[00:23:38] GTS: So thanks for bearing with me. I will make the best of this episode that I can, and I hope you enjoy it. I hope you enjoy your day with me and Dorothy and Aaron and all of the mundane things that we do. But I have to say, I live in a very simple place in a very ordinary neighborhood. I am very, very happy in my life and I am very satisfied and I think I can tell you why.
[00:24:13] GTS: It's not because of any one thing. It's not because of my faith, although that is a huge part of it, it is not because of Aaron or Dorothy or my children, my grandchildren. It is not because of any one element, it is because of gratitude. Gratitude. I am grateful. I am grateful that the sun came up. I am grateful for the stars. I am grateful that I am alive. I am grateful that even though my parents are gone, they were wonderful and I feel they're still with me and I'm grateful for that. I'm grateful for God, I'm grateful to God. I'm grateful for my brothers, though we're not really close anymore. I don't get to see them, you know. I am grateful for every good thing in my life and every single thing that ended up bringing good or wisdom or gratitude. It's the bad things sometimes that make you so grateful, right? Treasure what you got, baby.
[00:25:31] GTS: So I wanted to tell you about part of my PM routine. Of course, there's prayer, there's meditation. But I have this wonderful jar. You can't really see it on the audio podcast, of course, but if you want to check out the video I'm going to make, uh, you're going to see this really cool jar that I got several years ago. It was one of Oprah's favorite things, but you know, like, I don't know, seven years ago, 10 years ago. And it came with these fabulous cards and I still have them because I just made up my own cards. And one time my mom, for my 50th birthday, had everybody write their favorite thing about me. And I kept those cards in this gratitude jar because God knows I'm grateful for those little messages. So every night I write down on one of these cards or just a piece of paper something that I'm grateful for. And do you know what I'm putting on this card tonight? I'm putting on this card, Y-O-U, Y-O-U, my listeners, because you're a lot more than my listeners now, you're my friends and, I really feel that way. We're sharing some kind of, you know, intimate things and it's not just a one way street even though it is sort of a one way street right now. It is not meant to remain a one way street. I want to hear from you and I hope to hear from you and I'm looking forward to hearing from you and I'm going to keep on reaching out to you because I need some friends folks. I need some confidants and I want to receive and I want to give back. I got a lot of love to give folks and I don't have any kids at home. I got a husband and a dog. That's all I got here. So I need somebody to love. I'm not weird. Just a little, but hopefully you, you understand what I'm trying to say. I think you do. I really think you do. So I'm going to put this little gratitude card in my gratitude jar and I'm going to thank you once more. Thanks for being a listener. Thanks for being a friend. Looking forward to hearing from you now or later. I'm going to be around for a while. I'm 66. So we've got four more years of this till I have to transition to Seventysomething, right? If, if I'm not too tired in four years, right? I got a lot of episodes in front of me, but I usually have something to talk about. I guess you've noticed that anyway. Thanks for being here. It's going to be a little bit more, but I did want to just do this one little PM routine thing with you. I'm grateful for you.
[00:28:34] GTS: I'll be back one more time. Gotta say night night. Alright, see you.
[00:28:40] GTS: I'm making my way back to get the PJs and I'm gonna meet you on the chair, but I thought we could say goodnight to Dorothy. Okay. And she has to have her skincare routine. Remember she had a skin infection. So we still have to put her skincare product. Goodnight, Dorothy. We love you.
[00:29:00] GTS: So this is what I meant by the chair. I have a big old giant chair I like to sit in. I have a co-host who decided to join me unexpectedly. Thank you, Dorothy. She just, she just can't say goodbye to you. I have my nightcap, my pina colada, and I just want to say here's to you. Cheers. Thanks for being here. Thanks for being a part of this spend the day with me experiment. And if it was a failed experiment, don't worry. I never have to do it again. All right. I love you all and I will see you next week for our finale. This is our true finale. It's the last of the bonus episodes and then there's going to be a break for about a month or so. More details about that next week. I'm going to tell you my story and we're going to do a retrospective and update of this first season and talk about next season and I can't wait to share that with you. Have a great week and I'll see you soon, my wonderful Sixtysomethings
