Sixtysomething Bonus Episode 1 - What We're Watching
[00:00:00] GTS: Welcome back to Sixtysomething. I'm so glad you're here. Welcome to our first bonus episode. It's called What We're Watching. It's a special one because my guest this week is my husband, Aaron Segal. So I'm very excited. Hi, Aaron, welcome to Sixtysomething.
Aaron: I thought I'd never be invited. I kept wanting to turn 60.
[00:00:24] GTS: He's not 60 yet, folks, but he's close. But he's very close, but I will say that. Grace has done a phenomenal job on the show and I couldn't be any prouder of her. And I, because of what she's done, wanted to do my own podcast. One of the ideas I had was 59 and Neurotic; the other one was Pickleball and My Alienation. All shut down by Grace. That said, I still vociferously support her in her journey of podcasting and sharing her journey of Sixtysomething. Grace, I'm very proud of you.
GTS: Thanks for being here and for being the show's number one fan. I could not have done this without him, friends. Both Aaron and I love great storytelling and acting.
[00:01:13] GTS: As a matter of fact, the first time we were ever alone together, we went to a movie as friends. It was The Prince of Tides, and I'm shocked that I didn't scare him off right then and there since I cried all the way home, saying I wish somebody loved me like that. I guess he decided to accept the challenge because he really has for over 30 years.
Aaron: I don't think we went as friends though. My interest was more than that. Anyway, since we love storytelling, we love all of the related mediums, TV, film, and books too.
[00:01:52] GTS: Of course, we consume a lot of all three of those. I thought it might be fun for us to do this episode together and tell you about the TV shows and films we've enjoyed this year so far and why, as well as preview a few of the shows and movies we're looking forward to later this year. And hey, just a word of caution.
[00:02:14] GTS: We will try our very best not to share any spoilers. But we could by accident, and please forgive us if we do. Are you ready, Aaron?
Aaron: I'm ready.
GTS: Alrighty then, let's go.
Aaron: I want to interject one thing here, Grace. I want to harken back to what happened to the TV events of our youth, my youth, the 1970s or the sixties and the eighties.
[00:02:39] Aaron: What happened to a TV event like Rich Man, Poor Man? Tom Jordache, Rudy Jordache. I wanted to be Tom Jordache. I wanted to be the nickname. Where is something like that? Where's a special bulletin? Where's The Thorn Birds? Where's The Winds of War? Where's Holocaust? And you may remember that in Mississippi and Alabama, they didn't air it for the six nights. Where are these? We've got some good stuff to talk about right now, and I'm very proud of what we have, but I don't think we've reached the level that we had back in the seventies. Although I will say, as we go on here, a lot of, either on Netflix and Hulu and some of the streaming. And we have had some unbelievable stuff that may rival the seventies. Like The Queen's Gambit and Mrs. America, Mare of Easttown, The Honorable Woman. The Night Manager has been some quality stuff over the years.
[00:03:36] And I'm excited to talk about what we've watched in 2024.
GTS: Yes, let's come back to the present.
So, Aaron, these are the TV shows that he watched without me. Sometimes we're not on the same page. So he watched Baby Reindeer, and it's based on the real-life experiences of comedian Richard Gadd. Baby Reindeer details his time working at a pub during which he took pity on a lonely regular who turned out to be a stalker. This is on Netflix, and all episodes are now streaming.
[00:04:11] GTS: So what'd you think about it?
Aaron: I know you were going to watch it with me. I don't think you did.
GTS: I watched one or two episodes.
Aaron: I went in with low expectations and I right now have to probably put this as one of the best things I've seen certainly of this year. I really think it does a wonderful job of unpacking the frailties and human emotion and illness. And we really feel his powerlessness and frustration. And yet that's juxtaposed with pity for the woman who has ruined his life. Again, highly recommended.
[00:04:46] GTS: Okay, great. And next, Mr. And Mrs. Smith. A pair of spies pose as a married couple while handling a high-risk mission each week. And in return, get a lifestyle of luxury. That's Amazon Prime, all episodes are available. What'd you like about this one?
Aaron: I had no interest in watching it. We obviously saw the movie. And then I read the reviews and watched it. And again, the main lady lead, Maya Erskine, is so impressive in this. The chemistry is superb. And some of the guest stars in the Sarah Paulson, John Turturro, Alexander Skarsgard, Paul Dano. It really was not only fun, but it took the quiet moments in some of these episodes and it really elevated it to something quite special. So I highly recommend it.
[00:05:34] GTS: Next on Aaron's list is Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 12. TV's resident curmudgeon is taking his final bow with 10 Curb episodes. That's on Max, all episodes are available, and I know Larry David is a favorite of yours.
Aaron: Love Larry David, I wasn't going to miss it. I'm sure a lot of the people hearing this have probably seen Curb. Not its best season, but a lot of great moments. Wonderful to see the final Richard Lewis episode and to have Larry David end it. And I thought a really good way. He had Jerry Seinfeld on it. It was a good season, not its best, but overall, this is a wonderful show. Really enjoyed it.
[00:06:14] GTS: There's one more on Aaron's list that I didn't watch. It's The Sympathizer, which follows a half French, half Vietnamese spy at the end of the Vietnam War. He's exiled to the U.S., and Robert Downey Jr. plays multiple roles. This is on Max, all episodes are available. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen. And it really has it all. Audaciousness, satire, and deeply felt human tragedy. Robert Downey, a revelation in this doing multiple roles, the lead actor in this, I can't pronounce his name, phenomenal. Sandra Oh, phenomenal. Really something special. I really enjoy this.
[00:07:00] GTS: All right, so now we're gonna move on to my shows. I just have a few.
Aaron: House of the Dragon Season 2. The Targaryens return on the backs of their fire-breathing beasts as the family feud heightens into all-out war. Max episodes streaming Sundays at six. GTS: I don't know that I need to add that at all, because it sounded so exciting just that little description by Aaron. Real exciting. It's really fun. I love the dragons in Game of Thrones. There are a lot more dragons in this show. It is related to Game of Thrones, takes place 200 years before that whole story played out. The acting's great. It's very dramatic. Just like Game of Thrones. So I was really looking forward to season two and it's definitely living up and surpassing expectations.
Aaron: Wow. Okay. I'm still not going to watch it, but hearing you talk about it has me excited.
[00:08:00] Next for you, Under the Bridge. Lily Gladstone is a local law enforcement officer alongside Riley Keough. Investigative writer, both looking into the murder of 14-year-old Reena Virk in 1997. Based on a true story. Hulu, all episodes streaming. GTS: This one was good. It's not my favorite. I like true crime. I love Lily Gladstone. So really, I was in for Lily, but it was enjoyable. I'd give it a B minus. But Aaron dropped out. He didn't like it.
Aaron: To keep watching got better after the first episode.
GTS: Yeah, I think it got better. It just has a lot of teenage angst in it and neither one of us is big on that. But Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough were good too. So it was good enough.
[00:09:10] Aaron: Good enough from my list. Cannot take teenage angst. Next up for Grace, Homicide New York, new docu-series from Law and Order creator Dick Wolf. Revisiting some of the city's biggest cases, the detectives and the district attorney are the stars of this show. The five-part follow-up Homicide Los Angeles starts July 16th, Netflix, all episodes now streaming. GTS: Yeah, I saw this was number one on Netflix for quite a while. And I just thought how good can it be? We've watched all the big murder shows and it just didn't seem anything great. And then I watched it. And as I said in my description, the officers, the detectives, the district attorneys, they are interviewed extensively and that's the major content of the show covering some of the big crimes that they all worked on and ultimately solved. So I rate this very highly and I can't wait to see Homicide LA later this month.
Aaron: Yeah, I'm going to have to watch that now. You've got me excited on that.
[00:10:15] GTS: Okay. Next, we're gonna talk about quite a few shows that we watched together. We usually watch things together. First on this list is Shogun. It's based on the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell. There was also a mini-series with Richard Chamberlain in the seventies or the eighties or something.
Aaron: The eighties. I remember it.
GTS: It's a period drama set in feudal Japan. It's on Hulu, all episodes streaming. I went in not really knowing what to expect and I was blown away just by the cinematography, how they filmed it, the Japanese actors.
Aaron: Yeah, they were almost all Japanese actors. I think there was one British actor.
GTS: You say there's no more TV events and it's true that they don't promote them. It's not the same when there were, what, three networks.
Aaron: Yeah.
GTS: But to me, Shogun was an event, and I looked forward to the show every week. I couldn't wait to see it. And there's a lot of subtitles. I just want to warn you. It is mostly subtitles. But just watch it, get into it. You will love it.
[00:11:00] GTS: The next one we've watched throughout the years, but this is Hacks. A third season of Hacks focuses on comedian Debra's ambitions of becoming a late-night network TV talk show host and addresses cancel culture as well as personal loyalty. Max, all episodes streaming. I've never really liked Jean Smart. I've seen her in a few things that she was good. I wasn't into Designing Women or anything. She has knocked my socks off with this. She's got such a light touch. She's not a comedian, she's an actress, a really talented actress. And so she handles this in such a way that yes, she's funny and she can tell the jokes and she can do all of that stuff. But in her life, where we see her a lot, she's a very complex woman and it's really fun to see her and the people in her life interact. I've gotten a huge kick out of it, totally impressed with Jean Smart's performance.
[00:12:25] GTS: Yeah, I didn't think I would like it. I like Jean Smart from season two of Fargo. She was great in that. But what blew me away here is her young assistant Hannah Einbinder. First season, phenomenal. Second season, I was ready to give up. I thought they should call it quit. And this one delivers in spades. There's a season finale, not giving anything away, but it really ties it up beautifully. Couldn't have done it any better. Very happy that we watched it all the way through.
GTS: Next, we have True Detective: Night Country. This season of the twisty crime series takes place in Alaska, with the lead detective played by Jodie Foster investigates the disappearance of six men from an Arctic research station. It's on Max, all episodes are streaming. I don't know if Aaron was a huge fan of this. He told me to put it on the list, but we both love Jodie Foster. The woman who played her counterpart in the show was fabulous, she really made the show for me. And the scenery is spectacular because of where it's shot. I definitely give this a thumbs up, it's worth watching.
[00:14:08] Aaron: If you don't call it True Detective, I would've been happier with it. Are we ever going to top True Detective season one? After seeing Jodie Foster, I don't know if it was on our list, but in The Niad, I loved her in that. She's good in this, but the other gal, I think, steals it. She is phenomenal and the whole scenery of Alaska is something special. It just didn't click to me. It didn't all come together. It seemed forced. But what other things are on TV? This certainly surpasses most of it.
[00:14:40] GTS: Next up, Steve Martin documentary. It's Steve Martin's extraordinary story from its beginnings to his life today, told in two parts. Apple TV, both episodes streaming. I'll tell you, I thought I knew everything. And I thought, okay, Steve Martin, I love him, but. And I watched it and I would, again, wow. I did not know half of the stuff in here and what he did and how he did it and how really, how vital he was to stand-up comedy. And the thing about him is, yes, he's a comedian, he's an actor, he's a musician, he's a writer. And he can pretty much do everything. And he just also seems like a really nice guy. It was a fascinating documentary. I thought really fascinating.
Aaron: I totally agree.
GTS: Next on our list is Manhunt. The story of the 12-day hunt for John Wilkes Booth that came in the immediate aftermath of President Abraham Lincoln's assassination. It's on Apple TV Plus, all episodes are streaming. Aaron and I read this book, so we loved it. We were really looking forward to seeing this. I thought it was really well done. Particularly the guy playing Booth. It felt so authentic to me. I felt like this guy has nailed this. He was a psychopath who was completely enamored of himself and thought he was superior to everyone. And it. He did a great job. Everybody on there was great. And I'd say it was good. Didn't live up to what we read the book. That was just, we were so blown away by the book and God, this happened, this is how it happened.
[00:16:18] GTS: Next up, The Jinx Part 2. This follow-up to the Robert Durst story has more revelations, if possible, and new interviews with him from jail before his death. Max, all episodes now streaming.
Aaron: I will tell your audience, if the one thing is fascinated you the most in these years that I've known you, it might be Robert Durst. He has captivated you. And I think he's captivated the entire nation with this story. Incredible. He's done so many things and gotten away with so many things and had such odd behavior. And it's all been presented to us on the silver platter of The Jinx and The Jinx Part 2.
GTS: I am a little obsessed with Durst and I've read every single thing that I could get my hands on about him. He's just a slippery, psychopathic eel. I've got to give Andrew Jarecki a lot of credit because it's really well done. It's very entertaining. It's basically interviews and recreations. That's all it is. It's captivating, but it's so well done.
Aaron: Oh, well done. And I will let your audience know that I would say in this year, most of the dinners I've had eating with Grace, the conversation has either been Robert Durst juxtaposed with we go back to OJ too. That's also happened and then this podcast. So those are my three things. So I know more about Robert Durst than I ever wanted to know.
[00:18:00] GTS: Alright. Next, we have Clipped. Clipped dramatizes the story of one of the biggest scandals in NBA history. When audio was leaked of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling making racist remarks. This show is about the storm that followed. It's on Hulu, all episodes are now streaming. We just wrapped this up last night. We watched the last episode, the finale. What did you think?
Aaron: Coming off of Winning Time, the story of the Lakers, which was so much better than this. First episode, I'm like, oh, this is too TV. It's not good enough.
GTS: Remember what you said? It ain't Winning Time.
Aaron: Yeah, that's what I said. I can't do this. But I wanted to stay with it because everything that happened here was so fascinating. And then it was in venues, and then episode two on, I think it was episode three that we were looking at each other saying, this is great. Jacki Weaver, so good. The other characters come through in spades. My only criticism, and Grace, you may be thinking this, I never ever want to see a nude photo of Ed O’Neill again. There was too much in the last episode. Jacki Weaver makes it. And obviously, Laurence Fishbourne phenomenal as Doc Rivers.
[00:19:10] GTS: Yeah, he was good.
Aaron: He was good, and I've never seen him in a part like that. And I did not like V Stiviano, the person, the actress is fine. But it really felt for sure she did a good job. You really felt for her at the end. So I highly recommend the show. GTS: And all of the peripheral, the people on the team, the people in the all-back office and stuff. They were all really important to the plot. So we recommend that one, definitely.
[00:19:34] GTS: Next up, Griselda. This crime drama from the creators of Narcos dramatizes the life story of Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco. Played by Sofia Vergara. Netflix, all episodes now streaming. What did you think, Aaron?
Aaron: I didn't want to watch it. I really didn't want to.
GTS: I didn't think it would be good, but she was marvelous. It was so well done.
Aaron: Yeah, I think we waited a few weeks after it came out. And then I think I read one review going on and on about what she did to get ready for the role. And I thought we liked Narcos. Let's give this a shot. And there were a few misses, but overall, it really held your attention and she really transformed herself.
[00:20:21] GTS: Next, we have Ripley, which is a new take on the infamous scammer from Patricia Highsmith's novel. The Talented Mr. Ripley. There was a film with Matt Damon of this story, which was great. This is on Netflix, all episodes now streaming. I think you love this one, Aaron.
Aaron: I was really looking forward to it. As I know you were. Hard to compare to the movie and obviously the book that you know so well. These episodes, how they're filmed, but the cinematography, just to watch it for that and go, wow. The black and white, every shot is composed in a certain element. And he is good, the lead actor. And the gal in this movie, it's Elle Fanning.
[00:21:10] GTS: Yeah, she was really great.
Aaron: Yeah, she was really something special.
[00:21:11] GTS: Next up, Sugar. Colin Farrell is a kind-hearted private detective and a cinephile living in Los Angeles. A surprising twist midway through the show adds to the mystery surrounding the disappearance of a young woman. Apple TV, all episodes now streaming.
Aaron: Colin Farrell does. He works a lot, and I don't like all of his projects, so I don't watch many of the things that he's in, but this was so amazing. It was like, this was the perfect part for Colin Farrell at his finest. He may not have ever looked any better. Really? A man's man. All the females are going to love him, but in the whole thing, the whole noir thing, yeah. L.A. detective.
GTS: Yes. There were some things we didn't understand. And in the end, you will understand them. And good to see Amy Ryan again. A lot of good performances in this, but he's the one, he's the star of the show.
Aaron: Yeah, and I think maybe they're going to bring it back for a second season, and I certainly hope they do. And the mood of this, they intercut shots of old film. I think a lot of you will like it. Very one twist. We're not going to tell you you're there. You're going to buy it or you're not going to buy it.
[00:22:26] GTS: And now we have Presumed Innocent. It updates the legal thriller/mystery procedural story of a prosecutor who becomes the prime suspect when his female colleague is murdered. This stars Jake Gyllenhaal. It's on Apple TV Plus. Episodes are streaming on Wednesdays. This book was really one of my favorite books of the late eighties when it came out. And Harrison Ford and Alan J. Pakula filmed, probably one of my favorite films too. So very low expectations on this. But I'm enjoying it. I think David E. Kelley has done a wonderful job with it so far, and we're not done yet. I think if you try to let your expectations go, forget the book. Forget Harrison Ford. I get that whole thing. We don't know if it's going to have the same ending or not. So it's worth watching.
Aaron: It's worth watching. That's what I would say. I agree.
[00:23:32] GTS: Next up is Feud. Feud: Capote's Women. The story of how Truman Capote ingratiated himself with a flock of swans, a.k.a. beautiful women from New York high society, until he shatters their trust by publishing their secrets. Hulu, all episodes now streaming. I was really looking forward to this because I know a lot about this. I read the book that this was based on. I thought the first half of the series was great. And then I thought it broke down. Naomi Watts plays the premier swan, Babe Paley. And once Babe sort of falls out of the picture, I think the whole thing falls apart.
Aaron: I can see why you say that. I thought Tom Hiddleston as Truman was phenomenal. I love seeing Molly Ringwald. I love seeing Demi Moore. And I especially love seeing Diane Lane. Diane Lane, to me, steals the show.
[00:24:23] GTS: Yeah, she was great. Really, I was fascinated all the way through. I really enjoyed it.
Aaron: Yeah. Well done. Well done.
[00:24:55] GTS: Next is The Bear, Season 3. After accidentally locking himself in a refrigerator at the end of season two, our hero Carmi evolves over the course of season three's 10 episodes. We shall see. Now, in case you haven't seen this show before, Carmi is the brother of a guy who owned an Italian beef shop in Chicago. And he dies, and he leaves it to his brother Carmi, who is working in fine dining restaurants. Carmi comes back and takes over the shop, and the rest is played out over the three seasons. It's a wonderful show.
Aaron: Yeah, if anybody has not seen The Bear, please give this a shot. I think you will be captivated by it. I don't want to really say much about season three. There have been some people that haven't liked it. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It does a deep dive into the backstory. It goes even richer with some of the characters that we've come to know. So I cannot wait for season four.
[00:25:50] GTS: The New Look is next. Based on true events, the series features the story of Christian Dior and includes many fellow designers and rivals, including the one and only Coco Chanel played by my favorite Juliette Binoche. It's on Apple TV Plus, all episodes streaming. What did you think?
Aaron: I felt no desire to watch this going in. And after episode one, I was in. I did not know this story completely. So good.
[00:26:00] GTS: Yeah, the whole vibe of that, of how they captured it.
[00:26:46] GTS: Next, Eric. Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Eric, a puppeteer in 1980s New York who runs a Sesame Street-esque kids show, but begins to unravel when his nine-year-old son Edgar goes missing on the way to school. Netflix, all episodes now streaming.
Aaron: I love Cumberbatch. This wasn't exactly top of my list, but he's a great actor. I loved watching him. It mixed a few things that I liked. I love the soundtrack on this. I really thought I would hate this. And I also enjoyed it.
[00:27:00] GTS: Next is A Man in Full. Jeff Daniels leads the cast of Tom Wolfe's A Man in Full, an adaptation of a bestselling novel about a man who must defend his real estate empire. It's on Netflix, all episodes streaming.
Aaron: We love the book. I certainly love Tom Wolfe as you do. And you love the book and the audiobook that you know so well. But this didn't live up to the book.
GTS: Yeah, but Jeff Daniels.
Aaron: The book, I thought this has to be a home run, has to be a home run. It was something missing. Something wasn't there. I might say good, just because I know the material, but it didn't. Got it should have been so much better. Maybe there was something off with the casting or, yeah. I don't know, but it felt like a miss. But, what if Jeff Daniels is in? We're in. If Tom Wolfe is in? We're in.
GTS: So this was a no-brainer for us. We liked it. We just weren't in love with it.
[00:28:00] GTS: Totally agree. Next up, we'd just watched Perfect Wife. The mysterious disappearance of Sherri Papini. Keith and Sherri Papini's seemingly idyllic family life is shattered when Sherri vanishes from their Northern California neighborhood, triggering a frenzied search that becomes news around the world. Hulu, all episodes now streaming.
Aaron: Now, Aaron insisted we put this on the list. This was all him.
GTS: Now, I thought it was good. But this thing was number one on Hulu. It may still be number one on Hulu. It's a compelling story. If you do not know the story, you definitely should watch it. We had obviously heard about this on another crime show and I thought, why are we watching this? There really is no other way around it. There's something wrong, but it's a fascinating show to watch. And it's a documentary. So we're seeing the real players in this crazy story that went on for years. Because, it took the police a while to unravel everything.
[00:29:16] GTS: Yeah. Yeah. Crazy story. We recommend it. We really enjoyed it. And then we watch a lot of what I call the murder shows. Aaron, not used to watching these. Somehow, he's been indoctrinated. He is a bigger fan of these shows than I am.
Aaron: I didn't watch TV as much. I was reading the New Yorker. All of a sudden, now I'm watching 20/20, 48 Hours, and Dateline. I know more about murder, and if something were to ever happen to me or Grace, we're going to be suspects. Because they're going to look at our history. Every night, 20/20.
GTS: Yeah, especially me. Sure. I've looked up, how do you kill someone with salt and pepper? Something crazy like that. But yeah, we watch a lot of that. So now, believe it or not, we're finally ready. We're going to move on to the movies. And I think we only have together movies. Let's start with Hitman. A professor moonlighting as a hitman of sorts for his city police department descends into dangerous dubious territory when he finds himself attracted to a woman who enlists his services. Starring Glenn Powell, streaming on Netflix. Again, written and directed by Richard Linklater, who I love. The man that did Dazed and Confused. I went in, I don't really like Glenn Powell. And he was just in a movie with Sydney Sweeney. It seemed like a teen movie.
GTS: I hate to say that, but I couldn't. But this, he was phenomenal. And the actress in this was, wow. And the chemistry they had, really enjoyed it.
[00:31:00] GTS: Yeah. You know what? I guess Glenn Powell was in Maverick with Tom Cruise. Yes. Don't remember him in that very well, but then I went so long seeing that Anyone But You movie promoted. I'm like, I do not care about this. And the more I watched the trailer, I'm like, I like this guy. Plus that girl looks like my granddaughter. So I watched it. It's a romcom. Can't recommend it more highly than I am recommending it to you right now. Watch it. It's not 2024, but since we're talking about Glenn Powell, so I'm like, I'm watching this Hitman and I read a fabulous review of it. Yeah. And I didn't really, we didn't think it was the best movie in the world. But as Aaron said, there were some really fabulous performances in it by Glenn Powell, by this girl who plays his romantic interest. I recommend that. I have a good one to watch.
[00:32:00] GTS: Civil War. We saw this at a movie theater. A journey across dystopian future America following a team of military embedded journalists as they race to reach the White House. It is still in theaters. And pretty sure for sale to stream.
Aaron: High expectations.
GTS: Yeah. They weren't met. I thought there were some things in this they could have done better. I wouldn't have focused only on the journalist. I would have done some other things differently. But it worked on a lot of levels. And I thought the scene with Jesse Plemons is really something very scary. So I recommend this and an important film right now.
GTS: You know what? This was a wow for me. I cried through a lot of this movie because it just all seemed so possible and so heartbreaking. The performances were great. I just, I did love it and I really recommend it.
[00:33:07] GTS: Next up, The Bike Riders captures that rebellious time in America when the culture and people were changing, following the adventures of a motorcycle club. In theaters. The director, Jeff Nichols, does a lot of independent movies. When they reviewed this, I think it was last year that it actually was showing in all the festivals. I was excited by it. And it's got the star of Elvis. And he is phenomenal in this, but the mood of this, it's set in the sixties, the soundtrack. And I think it really dives deep into the characters. I really, and your gal from Jodi Comer, phenomenal from Killing Eve.
GTS: One other thing, really great.
Aaron: Easily getting nominated. Yeah. Easily getting nominated. I was not bored by this. It's a small film. I want to play it down a little bit, but if you go in with that, you're going to be really enmeshed in that whole culture.
[00:34:00] GTS: Yeah, I thought it was a weak story with some amazing performances and we want to see those.
Aaron: Yeah, I would agree.
GTS: Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Yes, we went to the theater to see this. I think we've both been fans of these apes since we were kids. In this one, a young ape goes on a journey that will lead him to question everything he's been taught about the past. And I'm going to mention that this takes place like 200 years after Caesar, the hero who we know from the Planet of the Apes movies. It's in theaters and for sale and rent to stream on July 9th.
Aaron: You are more of a fan of the new reboot. To me, again, Heston, Planet of the Apes, and James Franciscus, Beneath the Planet of the Apes. That's it. Everything else is, ah, whatever. But I wanted to take you to see this. And I was surprised by it. It had some really good moments in it.
[00:35:00] GTS: Next up, Remembering Gene Wilder, a special tribute documentary honoring Gene Wilder's life and career. Streaming on Netflix. I wasn't gonna miss this. He is part of my childhood. Producers. Blazing Saddles, obviously Young Frankenstein and all the other films that he did, and the Richard Pryor and Silver Streak and all. I've read his three books he's written. I absolutely love this man. I love his life. I love what he's done. And this documentary, I think, really captures him in all of the facets. I absolutely loved it. What did you think?
Aaron: I'm not a fan or let's say I wasn't a fan of Gene Wilder. It's just not my thing. That silliness that he specialized in. However, watching this, I had the irresistible urge to go back. All of his movies again.
GTS: Either way. I loved this documentary. It perfectly encapsulated his career and his life and his personality, and I really couldn't recommend it more highly.
Aaron: I totally agree. Totally agree.
[00:36:13] GTS: Now we're going to quickly go through what's coming up now on TV. Okay. It looks like we have Disclaimer. Cate Blanchett, Leslie Manville, Sacha Baron Cohen. The seven-part limited series follows a slippery, scoop-hungry journalist, Blanchett, who realizes that she is a character in a novel that reveals a long-covered secret. Apple TV, October 11th. Very excited.
GTS: Duster. Which is a Southern-set, 1972 period piece crime drama following the first black female FBI agent as she teams with a getaway driver to take down a crime syndicate. Wow. From J.J. Abrams. On Max. TBA 2024 sometime this year. Very intrigued by this.
Aaron: Next up, Lady in the Lake. Natalie Portman stars as an investigative reporter at the center of two 1960s murder mysteries. Apple TV. To be determined again, sixties. I'm in. TBA 2024. So it will be sometime this year.
[00:37:34] GTS: Next is Zero Day. A star-studded limited series with Robert De Niro, Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Angela Bassett, Connie Britton, Dan Stevens, Matthew Modine, and more. Not much more is known though.
Aaron: Okay, look for that on Netflix sometime in 2024. Right now that seems, how can this fail? There've been some others, like what was that one called? Don't Look Up or something? Leo DiCaprio was in it.
GTS: Gal Gadot.
Aaron: Let's hope, but we'll see. What a cast.
[00:38:00] GTS: Next up, The Perfect Couple. A young woman is about to marry into a wealthy New England family when suddenly a body turns up on the beach. With Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber, Netflix, to be determined 2024. I like the cast. Sounds good. I think that is a best-selling novel. Pretty sure. Yeah. I have to read that.
Aaron: Only Murders in the Building Season 4. Yes, they're back. This season's latest mystery revolves around the death of Sazz Pataki. That's Jane Lynch, one of our favorite characters on there. That's going to be August 27th on Hulu. So don't miss that.
GTS: Getting a little old. It wasn't a fan of last season, but let's see what happens. Hey, there's always something to enjoy in there.
[00:38:54] GTS: Now for the movies that are coming up. Movies coming up. Twisters. A retired tornado chaser and meteorologist is persuaded to return to Oklahoma to work with a new team and new technologies. And yes, starring Grace's new favorite, Glen Powell, in theaters July 19th.
Aaron: It Ends With Us. Adapted from the bestselling Colleen Hoover novel. We all know and love it. Lily overcomes a traumatic childhood to embark on a new life. Starring Blake Lively. In theaters, August 9th.
GTS: I've read many Colleen Hoover books, as many of you have, and I can't wait to see this show.
Aaron: Beetlejuice Returns. Lydia's life is turned upside down when her teenage daughter, Astrid, accidentally opens the portal to the afterlife and releases, you know who. The original cast plus Jenna Ortega star in theaters, September 6th.
GTS: I was never a fan of the original Beetlejuice, so I have extremely low expectations.
Aaron: I am Delia Dietz.
GTS: Yeah, I am Delia Dietz. That's why we're different. I love you. So I'm looking forward to that one. I never heard of this until I did the research for this. It's called Wolves. Follows two lone wolf fixers who are assigned to the same job, starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney. In theaters, September 20th. Obviously, great cast. I need to see who is directing this.
[00:39:00] GTS: So I don't know. Can't miss George Clooney, Brad Pitt. I'm in.
Aaron: Okay, we'll see. Megalopolis. An architect wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia following a devastating disaster. Francis Ford Coppola's self-financed masterpiece. Maybe. Stars Adam Driver. In theaters, September 27th.
GTS: Not going to miss it.
Aaron: Yeah. Got it. Let's see. The movie, you may not be bowled away, but the fact that he's doing it, you have to go. He's a true artist.
GTS: He's a true artist who doesn't want to support. Someone like him and a true auteur. I agree.
Aaron: Okay. Joker: Folie à Deux. It's a sequel to that 2019 film Joker with Joaquin Phoenix. Didn't he win Best Actor for that?
GTS: I think he did.
Aaron: And this time he's joined by Lady Gaga. Has to be good. It's in theaters, October 4th.
GTS: I'm glad you were reading that because I don't know that I would have pronounced that Folie à Deux so well done, Grace.
Aaron: I would have butchered that.
GTS: Next up, Wicked. The musical origin story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. Finally debuts on the big screen in the first of two parts. In theaters, November 24th.
Aaron: Let me also say of some of the other stuff that Grace has talked about incessantly will be Wicked.
GTS: I don't know if that's true. But I do love it. I saw it with my daughter on stage in Los Angeles. It was fabulous. The music is just unbeatable, unforgettable. A long wait for this. And then they break it into two parts. I am not sure if I'm thrilled with the casting, but I'm going to reserve judgment because I want to love it. So we'll see.
Aaron: It's November 24. So it sounds like we'll be going there around Thanksgiving.
GTS: Yes. I have a few additional 2024 holiday movies we're expecting. Mufasa: The Lion King, which is a prequel to The Lion King about our little friend Simba's father.
Aaron: There isn't a lot in here. I'm just going to say very quickly, we're probably going to go see it Sunday, but we both love Kevin Costner and there is Horizon. Reviews have not been the best, but that is in two parts. One just opened last week. The other one will be, I believe, in August. Three hours each. And I don't think we're going to miss that because they're doing three or four of them.
GTS: But this year, right?
Aaron: Two. But yes. Another filmmaker who, to me, is a true artist, a person who is following his heart. Even if it does not make good financial sense for him. And I really admire that. And that's why, I don't know if I'm going to like this movie, but I want to support Costner. We both do.
GTS: Absolutely. So there you are. And there you have it. If you're looking for something new to watch, we should have just provided you with some food for thought. There's so much to choose from with all of the streaming channels right now. It's hard to pick anything sometimes. And we realize we may not have talked about some of the very popular shows and movies, but we just haven't watched them. If you have something we missed that you love, we want to hear about it. Shoot me a DM on Instagram at Grace TS or visit our Facebook group, Sixtysomething. Links to those and all of my contact information are in the show notes, as well as this list of all of our shows for you to download.
[00:44:29] GTS: I'd like to say a very loving thank you to you, my wonderful husband Aaron. Thanks for being here and for all of the love and support you give me every day. I hope you'll come back. Folks, Aaron is an expert on cycling, also pickleball, as well as a very well-read man. You could probably tell. And he's an excellent cook too. Yeah, I know. I got lucky. So Aaron, will you come back and talk about one or all of those things sometime?
Aaron: I don't know if you're going to have me back. After this, I'm sure we're going to get off, and you're going to say you were too rambling, you were didactic and pedantic. But yes, I would love to come back. It was a real honor to be invited onto the podcast.
GTS: You heard it, friends. Look for Aaron's return to the show in season two. Thank you for being here, as always, and I'll look forward to seeing you next time on Sixtysomething for our second bonus episode of season one, when I thought we could spend a day together. Come and hang out with me and Dorothy and join us for a typical day here in the desert in July. I can't wait to be together again next Thursday. Same bat time, same bat channel. Bye for now.
